F-E-M-A-L-E

I know this is kind of a silly pet peeve, but I really hate being called a female. It feels incomplete to me.

“You are a female.”

A female what? Human? Monkey? Dog? Cat?

As Robin Williams said in Dead Poets Society

“So avoid using the word ‘very’ because it’s lazy. A man is not very tired, he is exhausted. Don’t use very sad, use morose. Language was invented for one reason, boys – to woo women – and, in that endeavor, laziness will not do. It also won’t do in your essays.”

To me, female is a lazy word. Don’t call me a female. I’m a woman damn it! I spent a long time being a girl, being treated like a girl, and feeling like less because I am – female. I have come a long way and grown a lot. I’m not a child or a monkey or a dog and while some days I’d rather identify as a cat than a human it doesn’t change that I’m a woman and pretty damn proud of it.
